What Advice Could You Give Up and Coming Writers?

To proclaim yourself a writer and then decide that you want to publish your written works is a huge leap of faith and, lets face it, is kind of scary.

We go from our regular predicable lives and jump into an area where many of us have no experience. I was that person 3 years ago. I will share with you what I did and the mindset I created to get to the point I am at today.

1 – Create Goals and Deadlines
You may already have your masterpiece in hand or simply the outline or skeleton of your final product. Either way, you need to decide when each milestone will occur, the steps you need to take, and the time you need to dedicate to get you there. Write it down on your calendar and share the deadline dates with a friend/spouse who can keep you accountable.

These are your landmark achievements to mark that you are getting closer to the final goal and give you a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. When you get to each one, celebrate either just in your head or do something special to reward yourself for getting to your goal.

Each goal achieved gets you closer to your dream.

2- Lose Judgment of your Art
Just write. Let it come out raw and non-judged. This may or may not be the final product that gets published. If you take the judgment filter off and allow it to just flow you could be surprised what your brain can churn out. You can always tweak it later. Most of my poetry comes out raw and stays in its original form. I only make small adjustments later to ease flow and rhythm.

3- Research aka Exploring the Deep Dark Recesses of the Internet
Whether you are self-publishing or pursuing a traditional publisher, do your research. Benefit from other’s experiences. Find out what resonates with you and pursue the path to get you there. For me self-publishing was the best venue. I have not stopped reading articles by other authors to keep my pulse on what is currently trending.

Stay current. Make sure the articles and information is what is happening now versus a couple of years ago. We are in an ever-evolving industry and it is important to find out what’s relevant in today’s world.

4 – Talk to Other Writers
Some of the best advice that I have received has been from other authors. Reach out in social media or anyplace where you come across authors who are further along in their careers. Use that information to chart new goals for yourself and explore ideas you hadn’t thought of yet.

5 – Expose Yourself
One of the hardest things as a writer is letting the outside in. As an erotic poet/writer I know this feeling intimately (so to speak). Being an artist is a vulnerable place to put oneself. There will be people who love what you write and those that, for whatever reason, do not. You will come across people who are so supportive and kind. You will also come across mean-spirited unfortunate souls who lash out at you. As artists, we are not given to being tough-skinned but I am finding that you have to be able to let the negative stuff roll off your back. That is not to say that you don’t accept critique of your work – that should be welcomed.

The only way to be a success is to let all your creativity shine!

6 – Listen and Digest Criticism
The best way to grow is to let others read your work and give you input/feedback. Fresh unbiased eyes are what you want to be able to evaluate what you are writing and the way you are conveying your creative idea. You can use this information to improve what you are doing and to grow to the best writer possible.

Keep your finger on the pulse of the standard of your work and always allow yourself to improve and grow. Critique can help us get there.

7- Faith
Have faith in your art. It is coming from your creative core. Embrace it and know that you are being a creative soul brave enough to share it with the world.

Best of Luck and Successes to You!

Author Bio
Words have always loved to come play with Clarissa O. Clemens. As a young girl and teen, Clarissa wrote for her school paper and used the written word to channel all the angst and longing for love through her poems and short stories. After her divorce, she again took pen to paper to process all the emotions that were slamming into her head and heart to try and heal, have hope again for love and intimacy, and rediscover the sensual being that had been lurking unattended for many years. After she shared these poems with close friends they strongly encouraged her to find a way to publish them and share them with the world.

In 2008, Clarissa graduated with her BS in Accounting and had been able to land a great job as an Accounting/HR Manager for a private country club. In July of 2011 she self-published her 1st book of erotic poetry from the series, The Poetic Art of Seduction. In addition to her 3 volumes of erotic poetry she has written to date, Ms. Clemens has published 2 volumes of hopeful heart poems in the series, The Poetic Diary of Love and Change; she is currently working on the 3rd volume to be published very soon.

Besides her passion for writing, Clarissa loves to play golf, travel, read, explore music, and spend time with family and friends. Her hope in sharing her poems and written works is to help put passion back into people's lives and rekindle the flame in their hearts for love and desire.
